Art Comes Alive at Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht

The Andaz brand is all about creating inspiring experiences for guests, and that is definitely no exception when it comes to Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht.

If you’ve ever walked into the hotel’s Lounge or through its hallways, you’ll notice that the entire hotel, designed by Dutch interior designer Marcel Wanders, is filled with an inspiring collection of video art. In fact, Andaz Amsterdam is the first hotel in the world to solely focus on video art and showcases an impressive collection of 40 works throughout the hotel, including those from local and international video artists Ryan Gander, Yael Bartana and March Titchner.

Just this month, the hotel took its video art to the next level through the purchase of two new video art works, “Material Conditions – Inner Spaces” (2013) by Finnish artist Erkka Nissinen and “Priapus Agonistes” (2013) by American artist Mary Reid Kelley. The purchase of these works stems from a special Andaz Amsterdam fund made possible by support from The Mind’s Eye, which is a partnership between the hotel’s designer, Marcel Wanders and the hotel owner, Paul Geertman.

Since these two pieces are on temporary loan, they will eventually make their way to the Stedelijk Museum and De Hallen Haarlem – two popular and well-respected museums in Amsterdam that will add the pieces to their overall collections. This is the second time that the hotel has been able to temporarily display new video art through the Andaz Amsterdam fund and it is also part of the hotel’s ongoing relationship with Art Rotterdam Projections, the primary place to learn about video art in the Netherlands.

Wondering how these two video art pieces were selected? An independent jury consisting of Xander Karskens (conservator at De Hallen Haalem) Bart Rutten (conservator at the Stedelijk Museum) and Nick Pritzker (representative of Hyatt) selected both works.

“The two selected video art works both excel in different, quirky ways and represent – with their complex, hybrid approach – different themes and languages colliding, an important position within today’s art” said Xander Karskens, conservator at De Hallen Haarlem.

Andaz hotels around the world have been creating inspiring experiences for their guest through art, whether it be the door to the bar downstairs at Andaz 5th Avenue painted by NYC-based artist Claw Money or the artistcally-inspired quotes that adorn the walls of Andaz Liverpool Street.

If you happen to be in Amsterdam, make sure to stop by Andaz and check out the newest video art pieces that are already making a big splash!
