Thrive Thursday: Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro Opens Doors to the Community Even Before Guests

It’s hard to believe that one year ago, Hyatt launched a new corporate philanthropy program, Ready to Thrive, as an extension of global corporate responsibility platform, Hyatt Thrive.  With a focus on literacy and career readiness, Ready to Thrive has taken shape in a number of ways and through various collaborations with nonprofit partners across the globe.  One particularly special example of this commitment is taking place in Rio de Janerio where a new Grand Hyatt hotel is scheduled to open in 2015.

Before even opening their doors to guests, this hotel has made big plans to open their doors to the local community.  With the initial donation from Hyatt of $750,000, the team is engaging two local nonprofits, AlfaSol and Roda Vida, to support career readiness and education programs for low-income youth in the community.

Thrive Thursday: Hyatt Unveils New 2020 Vision for Environmental Stewardship

At Hyatt, we are committed to caring for our colleagues, our guests and our communities. This simple idea has led us on an exciting journey to challenge our current way of thinking and operating and to create a bold new 2020 Vision for our commitment to environmental stewardship.

This vision builds on the extensive progress that Hyatt has made over the years to reduce energy and water consumption, produce less waste, build greener hotels and protect the natural resources in our communities around the world. Our 2020 Vision will help us to expand our scope and continue to position Hyatt as a leader in the industry when it comes to environmental stewardship.

Thrive Thursday: Hyatt Regency Hangzhou and Environmental Sustainability

Earlier this month I had the pleasure of visiting several of our hotels in Asia to talk about the future of environmental sustainability at Hyatt. Our colleagues in China have always been at the forefront of environmental stewardship and visiting each property brought a renewed energy and inspiration to our efforts.

During my trip, the team at Hyatt Regency Hangzhou really stood out for their tireless commitment to reducing their impacts and engaging colleagues in awareness. Most notably, the team has reduced energy consumption by more than 18% and water consumption by more than 25% compared to 2006 – quite an impressive achievement.

Thrive Thursday: Update on Typhoon Relief in the Philippines

Photo Above: Skye Fitzgerald for Mercy Corps

Many remember when Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) – the most powerful typhoon ever recorded at landfall – killed more than 6,200 people in the Philippines and left thousands homeless. In a matter of days, Hyatt launched a global fundraising campaign with Mercy Corps, a leading global humanitarian agency, to support disaster relief. The response far exceeded our expectations: together, we raised more than $267,000 for Mercy Corps, including more than $92,000 from our colleagues and guests.

Today, more than seven months after the disaster, we are thrilled to say the unbelievable kindness and generosity of our colleagues and Hyatt Gold Passport members has made a real difference.
