Celebrating Earth Day 2012 Around the Globe
This past week and weekend, our associates celebrated Earth Day by doing one of the things they do best – showing their communities and the planet some love. Hyatt hotels around the world took charge in helping educate guests, cleaning-up public and natural spaces, conserving energy, and more for Earth Day 2012.
We wish we could share them all, but here’s a handful of the initiatives we’re proud to have taken part in:
Hyatt’s corporate office teamed up with local hotels Park Hyatt Chicago and Hyatt Regency McCormick Place as well as students from Chavez for mulching, trash cleanup, and even weeding at Chicago’s Union Park. For the consecutive second year, we partnered with Friends of the Parks (FOTP), a park preservation organization, to coordinate the event that left the park sparkling.
Andaz Liverpool Street prepared a healthy “welcome to work” breakfast for associates, offered a workshop on reading nutritional packaging, and conducted an activity about keeping fit at work led by a personal trainer. For guests, the hotel gave away a tour of a recycling plant and an organic hamper, helping them see what happens cans and glass after it enters the recycling bin.
Located in South Africa, Hyatt Regency Oubaai Golf Resort and Spa is dedicated to water preservation. In an area plagued by limited rainfall and invader Blake Wattle trees with high water requirements, hotel associates worked with the hotel horticulturist to remove many of the invader trees within the boundary of the hotel property. Check out the video below to see their efforts in action.
In addition to a Green Team video screening, 10 percent of all food and beverage sales on Earth Day at Park Hyatt Milan were donated to buy plants in public spaces around Milan.
The Green Team at Hyatt Regency Casablanca ventured to the Ain Diab beach to pick up waste on the famous Casablanca coast and planted an olive tree in the staff garden as a symbol of the associates’ commitment to the environment.
Grand Hyatt Mumbai joined in on Earth Day celebrations with screenings of global warming videos, guest conversation, a cleanup drive, and a green menu at the associate cafeteria.
This year, Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa teamed up with LCRA’s McKinney Roughs Nature Park, a nature park adjacent to the resort, on the park’s seventh annual Earth Day Festival to educate parents and children about natural resource preservation. The nature-themed fun included guided hikes through pine forests; nature-themed crafts; and even educational lessons about energy, land, and water conservation through hands-on activity stations and demonstrations.
To celebrate Earth Day, Hyatt Place Lake Mary/Orlando North launched a Planet Green Package. This new package includes overnight accommodation, Plant-a-tree Seed Card, Welcome amenity with organic wine, water, snacks and chocolates, and a $24 discount off an annual membership in the U.S. Green Chamber of Commerce.
Hyatt Regency Mainz associates joined the City Mainz during the “Dreck weg Tag” cleanup nearby the hotel and on the banks of the river Rhine. To help educate associates about renewable energy and sustainable living, they also visited the wind wheel in Mainz.
In a month-long effort beginning on Earth Day, HYATT house Bellevue is inviting guests to join in preservation efforts with a $1 donation to American Forests, the only national nonprofit organization focused exclusively on protecting and restoring forests. For each donation, a tree will be planted on the guest’s behalf.
How did you roll up your sleeves this Earth Day?
