DIY Napkins with Grand Hyatt New York

Throwing a party? Looking for the elaborate napkins you see at Hyatt hotel events?  We reached out to our team of experts at Grand Hyatt New York and asked them to give us tutorials on napkin-folding tricks. Since New York City hosts some of the most festive events in the world, our experienced colleagues at Grand Hyatt New York were a natural fit for these fun, instructional videos. Try your hand!

The Standard Fold

Standard Fold Instructions

  1. Lay the square napkin flat, with a flat edge facing you.
  2. Take the side nearest you and fold it in one third of the way.
  3. Take the opposite side, and fold that in one third of the way (this layer should lie evenly on top of the other fold).
  4. Turn the napkin so it is vertical.
  5. Fold the bottom edge in one quarter of the way; fold it over one more time.
  6. Fold the top edge in one quarter of the way; fold it over one more time.
  7. Flip the whole napkin on its back, with a folded/rounded edge facing you.
  8. Take the folded edge nearest you and pull it back just past the top edge.
  9. Let the napkin fall into three tiers.

The Fan Fold

  1. Lay the square napkin flat, with a flat edge facing you.
  2. Fold the napkin in half by taking the left side of the napkin and carrying it over to the right side.
  3. Take the bottom edge and make a one inch fold
  4. Then take the newly-folded, one inch section and fold it under the napkin (accordion style).
  5. Repeat the process until you have about 3-4 inches of space left at the top of the napkin.
  6. Flip the napkin on its back; be careful not to undo your folding.
  7. Fold the napkin in half by carrying the left side over to the right.
  8. Turn the folded napkin horizontally so that the accordion edge is on your left.
  9. Take the top right corner and pull it to the opposite corner, folding it underneath the accordion portion.
  10. Turn the napkin on its side, and let the accordion fold fan out and both sides.

The Bishop’s Hat

  1. Lay the square napkin flat, with one corner pointed at you (it should look like a diamond).
  2. Take the corner nearest you and drag it to the opposite corner.
  3. Take the corner on your right and drag it up to the top corner; outside edges should align.
  4. Repeat the same step with the left corner.
  5. Take the new bottom corner and pull that towards the top corner, but only pull it about one quarter of the way up.
  6. Take the corner that you just pulled up, and fold it back so it touches the flat outside edge.
  7. Flip the entire napkin onto its back; be careful not to lose any of your folds.  The napkin should still resemble a diamond shape.
  8. Take the left half of the napkin and pull it towards the right half, but only pull it one third of the way; make sure that the bottom edge aligns with the current bottom edge.
  9. Take the right corner and fold it in about one tenth of the way; the corner should almost meet up with the other corner that was folded in.
  10. Take the current right half of the napkin and pull it in to the left part of the napkin; fold the entire bottom of the right side into the left corner of the napkin (the left corner piece is also the top most layer on the napkin).
  11. Flip the entire napkin on its back; make sure everything is flat and that the center lines are aligned with one another.
  12. Stand the napkin up on the table, and gently squeeze the outside edges in so that the napkin resembles a cylinder.
  13. Gently pull the two outside layers halfway down the napkin.
