Thrive Thursday: Braving Heights for a Good Cause

Are you brave enough to rappel down the side of a building? Recently, Boston residents and tourists may have looked to the sky and seen a strange site - a gorilla descending from the walls of Hyatt Regency Boston! This wasn't a reenactment of the 1933 movie classic, King Kong. Rather, the hotel partnered with Over the Edge for a fear-facing and heart-racing fundraiser event to benefit Special Olympics MA (SOMA).

More than 100 individuals signed up to rappel down the hotel's 22 floors, each with a personal goal of raising at least $1,000. Hyatt Regency Boston's own team of seven associates, including General Manager Philip Stamm, were among the ambitious bunch. Local celebrities were also brave enough to go "Over the Edge," including friends from WCVB Channel 5 News and Jenny Dell from New England Sports Network. While this was the second year in a row for this event, it didn't make the feat any less intimidating.

Safety first! Participants kicked off with safety lessons and practice rappelling short distances. Then, they headed up to the hotel's roof, where they enjoyed the city view (and many hoped it wouldn't be their last!).

In total, the event raised more than $150,000 this year! Nearly $290,000 has been raised between the 2011 and 2012 events, and we're eager to see how many brave participants we can bring out next year!
