Thrive Thursday: At Hyatt, Service Extends Beyond the Walls of Our Hotels
While we firmly believe that service extends beyond the walls of our hotels everyday, April is a particularly special time when we celebrate our company’s collective impact with our Global Month of Community Service.
Throughout April our colleagues are giving back to their communities in both big and small ways. For me, the most exciting part is seeing the different ways that giving back comes to life in each of our unique communities across the globe. To date, events have taken place in all three of our regions and across all of the Hyatt brands. In fact, I have already counted volunteer events in twenty different countries – and we are still just getting started!
Hyatt House Raleigh North Hills, North Carolina – USA
The staff at Hyatt House Raleigh North Hills participated in an “Ice Cream Social” at the Ronald McDonald House in Durham, NC.
Hyatt Regency DFW, Texas – USA
Hyatt Regency DFW took part in the MS Walk for the Cure in Addison, Texas. The Walk MS events raise awareness for over 2.3 million people that are fighting MS, and will help raise millions for new research. The team raised more than $1,800 and has been participating in these walks since 2012 when a fellow associate was diagnosed with the disease. In addition, one of the hotel’s current employees was actually hired through the MS Hands on Program.
Hyatt Regency Mérida, Mexico
The team in Mérida kicked off their service with a reforestation project to help plant more than 30 trees. The team also volunteered at a local animal association that is dedicated to the care and protection of abused or abandoned dogs.
Hyatt Regency Kiev, Ukraine
The team in Kiev is busy with several activities including cleaning and painting the local zoo, organizing arts & crafts for children with autism, fundraising for a local nursing home, and finally a blood donation drive. More than 120 volunteers from the hotel have signed up to participate in these projects!
Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt
Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh is located on the edge of Garden Bay, which is home to the finest underwater coral reefs, fish and colorful sea creatures, and considered as the world’s most captivating dive site. As part of the hotel’s Hyatt Thrive activities, a “Coral Care Committee” was formed to take care of the coral reefs as well as educate guests and other stakeholders about the importance of coral protection. In April, the Committee organized a coral reef cleaning session, in which a group of divers, including associates, guests and other certified divers, cleaned up trash around the reefs that had been dropped by tourist boats. The hotel will continue to organize such cleaning events periodically to take care of this precious marine treasure.
Hyatt Regency Incheon, South Korea
The team at Hyatt Regency Incheon participated in painting large murals on the walls in rural parts of Muui-do Island, which is a neighboring island with very little resources to improve its community and aging residents. All participating associates visited the island and turned a basic rural area into a vibrantly colorful village. After the event, the hotel hosted a tea for the village residents and Hyatt volunteers.
Hyatt Regency Chongqing, China
Associates from Hyatt Regency Chongqing visited a local school and donated books for the students. Located in a remote area, the school is comprised of abandoned children who have no one to care for them. In 2013, Hyatt Chongqing contributed a small library to the school. The newly donated books will help the students to know more about the outside world. During the team’s visit, associates also brought sweet cookies and played games with the children.
Hong Kong, China
Thirty volunteers from Hyatt’s ASPAC regional office, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, Hyatt Regency Hong Kong TST and Hyatt Regency Hong Kong Sha-Tin joined forces to encourage the love of reading and storytelling among a group of young students from Bring Me a Book Hong Kong. Having partnered with the nonprofit for many years, the Hyatt team donated new books and hosted a reading event for the kids. The team was touched and inspired by the lovely students who even performed songs for the volunteers.
Grand Hyatt Tokyo, Japan
Grand Hyatt Tokyo’s associates delivered “Sakura Omotenashi,” an activity of passing out hotel-made sakura (cherry blossom) sweets to visitors and workers at Roppongi Hills in appreciation of their support and to celebrate Spring. The two-day activity of giving back to the community was held when the beautiful cherry blossoms were in full bloom.
Andaz San Diego, California – USA
The Women@Hyatt San Diego Chapter recently began partnering with Team AMVETS by creating awareness and volunteer opportunities for our associates. Several associates volunteered at Team AMVETS™ “Welcome Home” furniture assistance program, which provides furniture and other household items to veterans who have been homeless but are now in the process of rebuilding their lives. Together, the team helped furnish homes for several veterans turning their otherwise empty apartments into a welcoming home.
Hyatt Bangalore MG Road, India
The team at Hyatt Bangalore participated in an exciting fundraiser which drew the attraction of 500 people to raise money and awareness for a local orphanage. All funds raised will support the education and welfare of more than 65 underprivileged children who live in the home. The hotel participated in this fundraising lunch by showcasing their award winning signature dishes of its restaurant, The Pink Poppadom. The team put their best foot forward and contributed magnanimously towards the success of this event.
Grand Hyatt Washington DC – USA
Grand Hyatt Washington recently participated in a food drive to support a local organization called S.O.M.E. (So Others May Eat). The team collected food donations to provide Easter meals to elderly residence of DC.
Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam partnered with the local college for tourism and hospitality to host a career exposure day for their students. The team has committed to providing these college students with hands-on exposure in their hotel and as well as assisting with the students’ learning and classes at the college. During the event, students were able to practice and learn skills such as room cleaning, laundry, food handling and hygiene from the hotel’s experienced associates.
Hyatt Regency Hua Hin, Thailand
In Thailand, April 11th to 17th is Songkran Holiday (i.e. Thai New Year). During this period, Thais travel back to their home towns and spend time with families. Unfortunately, the number of road accidents and fatalities during this time continues to increase every year. In Prachuab Khiri Khan Province, where Hyatt Regency Hua Hin is located, the number of fatalities is among the highest in the nation. Consequently, in coordination with provincial police, hotel associates were stationed at police checkpoints giving out bottled waters, preserved plums (to keep drivers awake!), and cookies to passing drivers and encouraging them to drive safely. More than 60 associates participated and the hotel hopes this small gesture will help decrease the number of accidents this holiday.
Hyatt Regency Newport, Rhode Island – USA
On Saturday April 12th, the city of Newport had a community wide clean up. Associates from Hyatt Regency Newport teamed up with their nearby neighborhood to help clean up local parks and drift ways. It was a great team building experience and also allowed the team to meet some wonderful people in their neighborhood.
Grand Hyatt Dubai, UAE
At Grand Hyatt Dubai, the team organized a special treat for children from Dal-al-Ber Society, a local orphanage. With help from The Kidz Club, Engineering, Marketing, F&B, Culinary and Rooms team, the hotel was able to organize a full day of exciting events for 30 children (aged 6-12 years) including a magic show, water sports, lawn games, a special buffet, fish and duck feeding, and flower arrangement lessons. At the end of the day, each child went home with a special custom designed goodie bag full of gifts.
